CULINARY STUDENTS CHALLENGED TO CREATE MEAL WITH PRODUCE
New R.E.C.I.P.E. program provides scholarship opportunities
Riverview, Fla. — August 7, 2008 — Culinary students don your whites and sharpen your knives because a new contest from the Southeast Produce Council is too delicious to pass up.
R.E.C.I.P.E. is a new culinary student scholarship competition designed to educate future food professionals about the bounty of fresh produce items.
R.E.C.I.P.E. is the acronym for Recognizing Educational Creativity in Produce Excellence. The program, following American Culinary Federation guidelines, provides scholarship opportunities for culinary students in the Southeast. The program is also a tool that educates culinary students as they move onto their professional careers about the variety of produce items available to foodservice operations.
“We hope this culinary competition will lead the way towards the rethinking and development of fantastic new uses of fresh produce,” said Terry Vorhees, executive director, Southeast Produce Council. “We believe in investing in the future of our industry through food service education and competition.”
The competition challenges culinary students to create a vegetarian three-course menu that includes a starter, main course and dessert. Students can choose from a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable items as part of their fresh pantry.

A committee of industry professionals will select the top six recipes, and those students will be invited to compete in a three-course meal cooking challenge in Tampa, Fla., at the Southern Exposure Convention on March 7, 2009. Finalists will also be judged on knife skills and other fundamentals.
Scholarship funding of $10,000, $7,500 and $5,000 will be awarded to first, second and third place winners.
Recipes can be submitted from now through Nov. 15, 2008, via e-mail to tvorhees@seproducecouncil.com or via mail to the Southeast Produce Council office (10015 Park Place Ave., Riverview, FL 33578-5303.)
